“A teacher teaches someone something…and in that order.”—Samuel Natale, D. Phil. (Oxon.)

Samuel Natale, D. Phil. (Oxon.), professor of strategy and ethics in the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, has proven to be an outstanding scholar and teacher for the past 14 years.

“[It’s an] ongoing and exciting challenge to evoke higher-level thinking in students and to engender the desire on their part to become engaged with the broader society,” Dr. Natale said about teaching at Adelphi.

An author and a consultant who has written or edited more than 28 books and hundreds of professional and academic articles, his scholarly areas of interest include ethics, corporate culture, strategy and decision making. He is currently researching the interaction of empathy with virtue and its impact on strategic planning.

Among his most recent publications is a co-authored work titled Empathy:  A Leadership Quintessential, which is to be published by Routledge Press in 2013.

In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Natale serves on a number of journal boards and is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Decision Ethics and section editor of the Journal of Business Ethics.

Dr. Natale clearly has a lot of material to draw from in the classroom. “A teacher teaches someone something…and in that order,” he said, sagely, enhancing the Willumstad School of Business on a daily basis by developing courses in international business ethics, conflict management and consulting management. He is an expert in the area of online education, moral education and is certified on many platforms.

“[My] work in empathy and moral education is considered foundational and began with the Farmington Trust at the University of Oxford in 1969,” Dr. Natale said.  “The Institute would provide a platform for scholars from Oxford University, along with our faculty and other international scholars, to examine the ethical and moral challenges confronting higher education in the 21st century,” he elaborated, noting that he is also the founder and director of the Oxford University Roundtable in Higher Education.

Dr. Natale received a B.A. in Humanities from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; an M.A. in Humanities from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland; and a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in Oxford, England.
