Undergraduate Programs| B.B.A. in Accounting | Plan of Study

Though the recording of business and financial transactions is as old as civilization, the modern profession of accounting is one of constant change—in theories, regulations, and practices. Students acquire both the technical accounting knowledge and the analytical and managerial capabilities needed to apply that knowledge to complex business issues. Students are equipped to enter and perform with distinction in the public and private sectors.

The accounting profession is divided into two broad areas: financial and managerial accounting. Financial accounting involves the preparation and use of accounting information for external reporting. Managerial accounting relates to the preparation and use of accounting information to measure managerial performance and develop plans and controls within an organization.

150+ Credit Program: The Fifth Year Option

Students planning a career in public accounting should be aware that the requirements to sit for the C.P.A. examination in New York State, as well as many other states, have changed. This change requires candidates who wish to sit for the C.P.A. examination to complete a 150-credit hour program. Our undergraduate accounting majors can meet the NYSED requirement and obtain an MBA by completing the 150-credit program:

In 1998, the Board of Regents approved amendments to sections 52.13, 70.1, and 70.2 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.  These amendments (1) revise the registration standards for programs leading to licensure in public accountancy by requiring, as of August 1, 2004, at least 150 semester hours of collegiate study in specified content areas; (2) require that individuals who apply for licensure in public accountancy on or after August 1, 2009 must have completed a registered 150-hour program or the equivalent, and (3) reduce the experience requirements from two years to one year for applicants who complete a 150-hour program in public accountancy or its equivalent.

Students enrolling in the 150-hour Program in Accountancy must maintain a minimum acceptable Grade Point Average.  Before taking graduate level courses, students must also achieve a minimum acceptable score on the Graduate Management Admissions Test.
